The Ecodesign for Energy-Related Products Regulations

Due to a new ruling which takes effect on the 1^st October 2021 (with an April 1st 2023 deadline), any light source currently being sold on the market must bear updated energy labels to reflect its true value. These labels must be rescaled, covering any existing label and printed directly onto the packaging.

Information to be printed on labels must show an arrow, detailing the light’s energy efficiency class and these classes must also be provided alongside the product, linking to its full energy label via a QR code, which when scanned will take the customer to the designated product URL.

The primary goal of these changes are to accurately rank a given appliance's energy consumption based on a scale from A-G - A being the most efficient - i.e. consuming the least amount of energy. This will help consumers to make the right choices for themselves and save money in the process and it helps companies to rethink they way they produce energy efficient products.

Hi-Line Lighting has been providing accurate labels for some time, which match our in-house photometric readings, and we will be ensuring to add further mandatory details in due course, such as the new UKCA stamp on all of our packaging.

This is a very positive step because such requirements demand that every product must show accurate CRI values, amongst other things, which sends a strong message to retailers, as sales could become greatly affected depending on how much information, or lack thereof, is being shared. We predict that some online retailers will continue to provide fake specifications in order to sell units and we suggest that anyone thinking of purchasing lights should look out for downloadable data sheets and photometric data readings. Should such information not be present via any website then approach with caution or contact the seller for further information. You will always find our information on any strip’s page via the attachments section. It is also important that you carry out your own calculations, which most professionals do.

Below is an example of what to expect. The EU QR code in the lower right corner will take you directly to an EU database, while the lower left corner shows the strip's KWh for 1000 hours of operation (1 KWh in the UK is approximately 20p). You will therefore see band C in this instance. While band A used to be expected, it would be very rare to see on future labels and realistically the highest rating achievable would be B, at considerable cost!

Whatever the case, you can be sure that Hi-Line Lighting will adhere to the new Ecodesign rules, making our labels easy to understand and more importantly providing 100% accuracy, which we've always prided ourselves on.
